“Am I doing enough to protect my business from data theft?” It’s a question that might always be on your mind but it shouldn’t be keeping you awake at night. The threat of hacking, data theft and even business identity theft  is always going to be around but what are the most crucial steps to ensuring that your company isn’t brought down by scammers?  See below our top ten tips towards keeping all the sensitive information safe and sound:

  1. Antivirus / Anti Spy Software, It all well and good having these but you must ensure your entire software is kept up to date.
  2. Passwords – all passwords should be strong, include upper & lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Never duplicate passwords and change on a regular basis and when you have a change in staffing.
  3. Separate and sensitive data, make sure it’s not accessible from shared or public files or desktops.
  4. Have sensitive information encrypted where possible, this will safe guard the data should any security breach occur.
  5. Use a good firewall security system; these usually spot any potential viruses before they hit your systems.
  6. Shredders! This may sound old fashioned but all businesses still use paper format for many forms of information. If this isn’t disposed of properly you are putting yourself and your customers at risk.
  7. Safely secure all removable devices such as USB’s and any paper files containing personal information locked in cabinets with restricted access if possible.
  8. Staff training is vital, your employees must be made aware of any privacy policies you have in place, keep social media use under a watchful eye as almost three quarters of malware penetrates systems this way.
  9. Avoid clicking links in emails whether via attachment or a web link, its much safer to type the web address into your browser. This is due to ‘Phishers’, they basically take you to a website that may look legitimate but in fact is ‘Phishers’ gaining information such as bank details passwords and other private data.
  10. Account for all mobile devices, it would be better avoiding holding any sensitive data on a mobile device but where this is unavoidable ensure you limit the amount of mobile phones, tablets and laptops that are in circulation and any data on them is fully encrypted.
